Capital Safety Australia – Working Towards a Sustainable Future

In 2010, Capital Safety, Australia decided to include ‘Sustainability’ as one of our core company values. A committee (The Green Team) was formed consisting of employees from all areas of the business with a directive and commitment to make our business more environmentally sustainable.

Put simply, we want to conduct ourselves in a manner that meets our current needs whilst preserving the ability of future generations to
meet their needs.

Sustainability involves meeting a triple bottom line:

SPACER
  • Social Bottom Line: relationships with community, employees and stakeholders
     

  • Environmental Bottom Line: maintaining and enhancing our environment
     

  • Economic Bottom Line: being a profitable company/ organisation that stays in business
     

The Green Team, together with internal and external stakeholders meet on a regular basis and works to change our organisational behaviour, workplace practices and culture in the pursuit of environmental sustainability.

At Capital Safety we are committed to creating an environmentally aware and responsive workforce to achieve our Sustainability goals and effect changes that benefits the environment, our customers and colleagues.


Our A
chievements to Date

  • Developed a sustainability action plan with 9 core goals, timeline and delegation of responsibilities;
  • Appointed an internal Sustainability Advantage Champion to oversee our Sustainability objectives;
  • Developed a sustainability policy and communicated to all staff: Capital Safety Sustainability Policy;

  • Appointed a 'Green Team' committee consisting of management and team members from all levels of the organisation; 

  • Working with key suppliers to seek reductions in packaging materials;
  • Conduct formal staff communications forums bi monthly to keep staff informed and up to date with our Sustainability activities;
  • Established core metrics for measuring waste and energy usage to discover areas for improvement;
  • Implemented new packaging designs into our core product range to eliminate plastics and reduce total waste at an end user level;
  • Received Bronze Partner Award on World Environment Day 2011 (3-06-2011) at the Sustainability Advantage Recognition Event for introducing initiatives that have reduced our environmental impact: View the official Media Release;
     
  • Provision of re-useable bottles to all staff (and training course attendees) and the provision of water coolers to reduce plastic waste;
     
  • Implemented an energy efficiency programme throughout the organisation to reduce energy consumption through the following measures: - introduction of low voltage fluorescent light tubes - turning off of all non essential lighting - turning off air-conditioning in areas not used and sealing rooms accordingly - turning off all equipment over the holiday period from stand-by mode - installation of timers on the zip-boil hot water heaters - installation of sensor lights in all bathrooms;
                    
     
  • Implemented a 2-sided printing initiative for all staff to print double sided wherever possible, thus reducing our paper consumption;
     
  • Engaged an external consultant to assist with the implementation of ISO14001 environmental compliance;
     
  • Pursuit of digital marketing efforts to reduce the amount of printing required in our marketing activities;
     
  • Introduction of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to improve efficiency with key customers to reduce paper based communication;
     
  • Introduced an environmentally sustainable purchasing programme to source sustainable products for use within the organisation;
     
  • Established in house recycling stations where staff can deposit various items for recycling including: - household batteries - household Fluorescent Tubes - mobile phones - desktop PC’s, laptops & monitors;
     
  • An associate member of the Clean Energy Council, actively participating at their exhibitions and events;
     
  • Implemented recycling initiatives at all levels of the organisation (this supplemented existing paper/cardboard recycling), reducing general waste by by 532kg over a 10 month period;
     
  • Introduction of energy efficient LED computer screens, progressively changing out all screens as each machine becomes obsolete.
