Work Safely at Heights (RIIOHS204A)

Course Aim: This unit covers working safely at heights in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes; accessing and installing equipment; performing work at heights; and cleaning up the work area.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: There are no prerequisite or co-requisite requirements for this unit of competency.

Course Objectives: 
By the end of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate: 
  • Knowledge of:
    • The names and functions of equipment, components and materials
    • Equipment manufacturers’ instructions and specifications
    • Safe shifting and handling of tools and materials
    • Statutory and regulatory authority requirements
    • The nature of work undertaken at height
    • Heights safety systems
    • The process of providing for safe working practices
    • Safety equipment/systems and considerations to facilitate working safely at heights
    • Safe work methods
  • Skills in the following:
    • Apply legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures
    • Access, interpret and apply technical and safety information
    • Apply diagnostic/fault finding techniques
    • Apply environmental requirements
    • Apply isolation procedures
    • Work in varying weather conditions

Enter Confined Space (MSAPMPER205C)

Course Aim: This competency covers the entry to confined spaces, for maintenance, servicing of vessels or other necessary reasons. Work in/entry to confined spaces shall conform to relevant legislation and AS2865:2009, or its authorised update or replacement. AS2865:2009 requires reassessment 'at appropriate intervals'. The industry regards reassessment on a two to three year cycle as good practice.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: 
MSAPMPER200C Work in Accordance with and Issued Permit is a prerequisite of this unit. MSAPMOHS216A Operate Breathing Apparatus and MSAPMOHS217A Gas Test Atmospheres may be delivered and assessed in conjunction with this unit of competency.

Course Objectives: By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 
  • Access and interpret information relevant to specific tasks (e.g. labels, MSDSs hazchem signs)
  • Access and apply hazard controls
  • Identify changes to conditions which may lead to the permit being revoked before the job is completed
  • Describe and/or explain hazards associated with tasks covered by the permit, types of tests required for the issue of work permits - the types of tests to include, atmospheric/oxygen/ breathability, flammability/explosivity, toxicity/TWA, temperature, humidity
  • Interpret and respond to gas test/monitoring results/information
  • Iidentify a change in work conditions, possible new hazards and so the required hazard controls and obtain revalidation of permit
  • Implement hazard controls

    • Recognition of a confined space
    • The ability to work within a confined space
    • Compliance with the permit conditions

Course Aim: This unit covers the entering and working in confined spaces in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning and preparing for entry of confined spaces; entry and working in confined spaces, exiting confined spaces and cleaning up. The course covers: Plan & prepare for entering and working in confined spaces; Enter & work in the confined space; and Exit the confined space.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: 
There are no prerequisite or co-requisite requirements for this unit of competency.

Course Objectives: 
By the end of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the requirements, procedures and instructions for entering and working in confined spaces
  • Implementation of requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion for entering and working in confined spaces
  • Working with others to undertake and complete the entering and working in confined spaces that meet all of the required outcomes
  • Consistent timely completion of entering and working in confined spaces that safely, effectively and efficiently meets the required outcomes

Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit (MSAPMPER200C)

Course Aim: To ensure that people working under a permit to work understand the system, know the limitations of the permit under which they are working and comply with all the requirements of the permit. This unit covers the basic competency of working under a permit. Where entry to a confined space is required, then MSAPMPER205C Enter confined space is also required.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: There are no prerequisites or co-requisite requirements for this course. However, MSAPMPER205C Enter Confined Space, MSAPMOHS216A Operate Breathing Apparatus and MSAPMOHS217A Gas Test Atmospheres may be delivered and assessed in conjunction with this unit of competency.

Course Objectives:
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 
  • Access and interpret information relevant to specific tasks (e.g. labels, MSDSs hazchem signs)
  • Identify changes to conditions which may lead to the permit being revoked before the job is completed

    • Undertaking the work strictly in accordance with the provisions of the permit
    • Maintaining correct housekeeping with permit activities
    • Completing work in accordance with the permit requirements
    • Querying or raising matters about the permit if the scope of work/nature of the tools to be used varies from that covered by the permit

Confine Small Workplace Emergencies (PUAWER008B)

Course Aim: This unit covers the competency required to confine small workplace emergencies.Small workplace emergencies may include such incidents as a small fire that can be controlled using a nearby fire extinguisher. This course covers: preparing for emergency situations; identifying and assessing the emergency; safely confining the emergency where possible; initial use of initial response equipment; and reporting workplace emergency response.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: There are no prerequisite or co-requisite requirements for this unit of competency.

Course Objectives: By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 
  • Communicate in an effective manner
  • Give and follow instructions
  • Implement workplace procedures
  • Re-stow initial response equipment
  • Risk management
  • Use initial response equipment, e.g. portable fire extinguisher, fire blanket, fire hose
  • Identify:
    • Appropriate initial response equipment
    • Hazards involved with initial response action
    • Implications of the incorrect use of equipment
    • Situations that must not be responded to because of the risk
    • Types of emergencies

Perform CPR (HLTCPR201B)

Course Aim: To provide the necessary skills and knowledge to allow a person to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: There are no prerequisites or co-requisites for this unit.

Course Objectives: By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 
  • Respond to signs of an unconscious casualty
    • Identify and minimise hazards to health and safety of self and others in the immediate workplace or community environment
    • Use infection control procedures, including standard precautions
    • Assess vital signs of casualty
  • Perform CPR
    • Demonstrate correct procedures for performing CPR using a manikin, including standard precautions
  • Communicate details of the incident
    • Call an ambulance
    • Call for medical assistance
    • Report details of incident and CPR as provided

Provide Basic Emergency Life Support (HLTFA201B)

Course Aim: To provide the necessary skills and knowledge to enable a first aider to provide an initial response to an emergency in line with practised actions and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and/or state/territory regulations, legislation and policies and accepted industry guidelines.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: This unit stands alone and incorporates the content of unit HLTCPR201A Perform CPR.

Course Objectives: 
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate first aid casualty management principles:
    • Assess and minimise danger
    • Check for response
    • Maintain casualty’s airway, breathing and circulation.
  • Assess vital signs and responses of casualty
  • Demonstrate:
    • Safe manual handling of casualty
    • Consideration of the welfare of the casualty
    • Correct procedures for CPR on a resuscitation manikin
    • Implementation of standard precautions
  • Plan an appropriate first aid response in line with established first aid principles, policies and procedures, ARC Guidelines and/or state/territory regulations, legislation and policies and industry requirements and respond appropriately to contingencies in line with own level of skills and knowledge
  • Call an ambulance and/or medical assistance, according to circumstances and report casualty’s condition
  • Identify and minimise hazards to health and safety of self and others in the immediate workplace or community environment
  • Report details of emergency incident and first aid provided

  • Plan an appropriate first aid response in line with established first aid principles, policies and procedures, ARC Guidelines and/or State/Territory regulations, legislation and policies and industry requirements and respond appropriately to contingencies in line with own skills
  • Demonstrate correct procedures for performing CPR using a manikin, including standard precautions (i.e. as per unit HLTCPR201A Perform CPR)
    • Apply first aid principles
    • Infection control, including use of standard precautions
    • Follow O H & S guidelines
  • Demonstrate:
    • Safe manual handling
    • Consideration of the welfare of the casualty
    • Ability to call an ambulance
    • Site management to prevent further injury
  • Provide assistance with self-medication as per subjects own medication regime and in line with State/Territory legislation, regulations and policies and any available medical/pharmaceutical instructions

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: This unit should be assessed after achievement of the following related competency unit: HLTFA301B Apply First Aid. This unit is structured to incorporate the content of: HLTFA404A Apply Advanced Resuscitation Techniques.
 
Course Objectives: By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 
  • Manage specific injuries/illnesses and conditions
  • Conduct an initial casualty assessment
  • Plan an appropriate first aid response in line with established first aid principles, policies and procedures, ARC Guidelines and/or State/Territory regulations, legislation and policies and industry requirements and respond appropriately to contingencies in line with own skills
  • Apply advanced resuscitation techniques as per HLTFA404A Apply advanced resuscitation techniques
  • Use a range of first aid equipment as outlined in the Range Statement

Course Aim: This unit deals with the provision of advanced first aid resuscitation techniques, life support, and management of casualty(s), until the arrival of medical or other assistance, and provision of support to other providers.

Course Objectives:
 By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 
  • Manage specific injuries/illnesses and conditions as identified in the Range Statement for this competency unit
  • Conduct an initial casualty assessment
  • Plan an appropriate first aid response in line with established first aid principles, policies and procedures, ARC Guidelines and/or State/Territory regulations, legislation and policies and industry requirements and respond appropriately to contingencies in line with own skills
  • Apply appropriate resuscitation techniques, including use of:
    • Oxygen in resuscitation and oxygen therapy
    • Bag valve mask resuscitation device
    • AED
    • Mechanical and oxygen powered suction devices
    • Oropharyngeal airways
  • Demonstrate:
    • Assembly of the bag valve mask resuscitation device
    • Effective use of the bag valve mask device on a manikin
    • Selection and use of an oropharyngeal airway
    • Correct selection and operation of oxygen masks and cannulae
    • Provision of oxygen to a bag valve mask device
    • Provision of supplemental oxygen to a breathing patient

  • Incorporate the use of all equipment into effective treatment of illness/injuries specified in the Range Statement
  • Demonstrate the application of first aid principles
  • Comply with OHS legislation
  • Administer oxygen in line with state/territory regulations, legislation and policies and any available medical/pharmaceutical instructions
  • Prepare a written incident report or provide information to enable preparation of an incident report
  • Interpret and use listed documents
  • Communicate effectively and assertively and show leadership in an incident
  • Make prompt and appropriate decisions relating to managing an incident in the workplace
  • Use literacy and numeracy skills as required to read, interpret and apply instructions, guidelines and protocols
  • Call an ambulance and/or medical assistance according to relevant circumstances and report casualty’s condition
